YouTube Unlisted vs Private: Who Can Watch?
Unlisted YouTube videos are watchable by anyone with the link. Private videos are limited to people you choose. Learn the difference and what to check.
Unlisted and private YouTube videos are not the same. Anyone with an unlisted video's link can watch and share it. A private video can be seen only by its owner and the people the owner chooses.
This distinction matters before you send a video link, share a review draft, or consider any outside engagement service. A link that opens for you does not prove it is public, and an unlisted setting does not make the video confidential.

What is the difference between unlisted and private?
Unlisted videos are link accessible. Private videos are access controlled. Neither setting is identical to Public.
| Setting | Who can watch? | Where can people find it? |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone on YouTube | May appear on the channel, in search results, and in recommendations. |
| Unlisted | Anyone who has the link | Does not normally appear in the channel Videos tab or YouTube search, unless it is added to a public playlist. |
| Private | The owner and people the owner chooses | Does not appear in public search results or the channel Videos tab. |
YouTube's video privacy settings guide explains these differences. The setting controls who can watch and where the video appears. It does not change the content itself.
Who can watch an unlisted video?
Anyone with the link can watch and reshare an unlisted video. Viewers do not need to be invited by the owner just to open the link.
Unlisted videos do not normally show in your channel's Videos tab or in YouTube search. YouTube notes an exception for search visibility if someone adds an unlisted video to a public playlist.
So unlisted means “not listed publicly in the usual places,” not “only the person I sent it to can watch.” A recipient can forward the link, and someone else who receives it may be able to open the video.
If an older upload now appears Private, check its current setting before sharing it. YouTube says some Unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made Private during a 2021 security update unless the creator opted out.
See YouTube's older Unlisted content help page for the details of that change.
- Good fit: sharing a draft or reference with people who have the link, when link forwarding is acceptable.
- Not a privacy boundary: keeping a video away from anyone beyond the original recipient.
- Check before sharing: confirm that you are comfortable with anyone who gets the link being able to view it.
If you need to restrict access to selected viewers, review YouTube's private sharing controls instead of relying on an unlisted URL.
Who can watch a private video?
A private video is limited to the owner and viewers the owner selects. YouTube's guide says invited viewers need to use the account that was given access.
A private link by itself does not grant access to every person who receives it. Someone who is not included may see an access or sign in prompt rather than the video.
Private videos do not appear in public search results or the channel's Videos tab. YouTube can still review private videos for copyright, ad suitability, and other abuse prevention purposes.
Choose Private when access should remain limited to selected people. Before inviting someone, check the email address and make sure the person can use the account associated with that invitation.
What should a buyer check before sharing a video link?
Open the exact video link in a separate browser session before sending it. This helps you check whether it is public, unlisted, private, unavailable, or pointing to the wrong video.
- Copy the URL from the intended video, not from a playlist or channel page.
- Open a private browsing window where you are not signed in to the owner account.
- Check that the video opens and that its title and channel match the intended target.
- If it asks for an invited account, treat it as private. Do not share your password or sign in details with a service.
- Decide whether link forwarding is acceptable before using Unlisted.
A product page may request a public profile or video link, but that wording does not confirm that every visibility setting is supported. Check the specific service instructions and ask support if an eligibility detail is missing.

Does video privacy make artificial views allowed?
No. A public, unlisted, or private setting does not create an exception to YouTube's Fake Engagement policy. YouTube says it does not allow methods that artificially increase views or other metrics.
The policy also says engagement is legitimate when a human's main intent is to interact authentically. It warns that views identified as artificial may not count and can lead to account or content penalties.
That applies whether a video is Public, Unlisted, or Private. A video being reachable by link does not make artificial view activity compliant.
Do not use or promote a service in a way that violates YouTube's rules. Read the current Fake Engagement policy before taking action. YouTube's own advertising tools are a separate route from artificial view inflation.
Bottom line: Unlisted controls discovery, Private controls access, and neither changes YouTube's rules for artificial views.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone watch an unlisted YouTube video?
Anyone with the link can watch and share it. Unlisted videos are not normally listed in search or on the channel Videos tab.
Can anyone watch a private YouTube video with its link?
No. Private videos are limited to the owner and people the owner chooses. The link alone does not grant access to everyone.
Does an unlisted video appear in YouTube search?
Usually not. YouTube says an unlisted video may appear if someone adds it to a public playlist.
Can I make a private video unlisted later?
YouTube Studio lets an owner change a video's visibility. Check the current privacy settings before sharing the link again.
Why did an older unlisted video become private?
YouTube says some unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made private in a 2021 security update unless the creator opted out.
Does an unlisted link make a video confidential?
No. Anyone who receives the link may be able to watch and reshare it.
Can I buy views for a private or unlisted video?
YouTube's Fake Engagement policy prohibits artificial view inflation. A video's privacy setting does not change that rule.
Bottom line
Use Unlisted for link access and Private for selected viewers. If the video is sensitive, do not rely on an unlisted link to keep it between you and one recipient.
Check YouTube's current privacy settings guide and Fake Engagement policy before sharing a video or considering any engagement activity.
